Detroit’s Nicholas Castellanos seemingly scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning but after review and having been called safe initially, the replay decision overturned the call bringing the Pirates, who had already conceded the win and were in the locker room, back onto the field.  First-year Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire, doing his best Earl Weaver imitation, got in a few choice words before getting tossed.

The Detroit Tigers scored four runs in the 7th inning to tie the score, 6-6.    Each team scored four runs in the ninth inning to send the game into extra innings.

In the middle of the game, home plate umpire Mike Everitt took a direct hit fastball to the mask from Pittsburgh’s reliever George Kontos when catcher Francisco Cervelli got crossed up; he left the game.

Gregory Polanco hit a three-run homer in the top of the 13th inning to give the Pirates the final lead and win but not before the Tigers put two on with one out in the bottom of the inning.

Only two players in the starting lineups, one from each team, didn’t get a hit.

31 hits total, 23 runs , 5 errors, 15 pitchers were used. Game time –  5 hours 27 minutes. It’s Opening Day !!!
